Police, Security & Crime

The South African government, and the 9 host cities, have all signed contracts guaranteeing ALL visitors to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA world cup, absolute safety during their stay. With that in mind, huge amounts of money is being spent upgrading police skills and their equipment, to the point where FIFA are convinced that all visitors will be safe.

My hope is that we can keep those same standards going after the world cup - imagine how tourism will increase if all of our 9 host cities are safe for any tourist! Below are some of the stats that show how the fight against crime is being taken seriously.

interesting facts:

- Trevor Manuel has made an extra R10 billion available to fight crime ahead of 2010
- This money is being used to employ a further 35 000 police, upgrade their skills, install a large CCTV network and improve on policing equipment.
- Gov has also authorized R77 M from Criminal Assets Recovery Fund to police improvement
- Business against crime has donated R19.2 M for training

Security aims in the build up to the world cup...

-To Improve efficiency of 10111 emergency, Roadblocks, and Policing in trains
- Start a social movement against crime
- Criminal justice system is under review

What about football hooliganism? And international terrorism?

As with the German world cup, police from the various countries will keep an eye on their own fans, and this should enable them to recognise trouble makers, and also use their understanding of their own fans to calm down difficult situations.
Interpol will be in control of any terrorism situations
